Angel Fire Horseback Riding

With a horsecrazy daughter, we have more than just a little experience with Angel Fire horseback riding! There are two absolutely fabulous places to enjoy riding here. Whether you are experienced, or taking your first ride, you'll want to make this part of your family's trip to Angel Fire.

We've seen elk, a coyote, deer and a fox while riding out here. But even if you don't encounter any wildlife, the mountain and valley vistas will make your ride an unforgettable adventure.

Roadrunner Tours

We love Roadrunner Tours! Nancy Burchs owns and operates this riding stable that has been in Angel Fire for years. She has many wonderful horses and offers a variety of rides from 1.5 hours to overnight. The guides are friendly and all are Red Cross CPR certified.

Rides include:

  • Mountain and forest trail rides
  • Sunset dinner rides
  • Old-fashioned Gold Panning Day Trips (they teach you how)
  • Winter sleigh rides
  • Wagon and sleigh rides
  • Chuckwagon dinner rides
  • Wedding carriages
  • Full-service elk hunts

Roadrunner's headquarters are at the flashing light in town but we recommend you call Nancy at 575-377-6416 to set up a ride as soon as you get in town. Be sure to tell her Sydney sent you!

Angel Fire Resort Riding Stables

It was a nice surprise to see a new riding stable when we came out this summer. The couple who run this stable, Penny and Gary, and their daughter Amanda, have lots of experience with horses. They came from Montana, where Gary led pack rides in Yellowstone. And they brought their horses from Montana with them!

Sydney took two rides with Angel Fire Resort Stables. On the first one, she rode Leroy on a mountain ride with Amanda as her guide. They spotted a coyote! and had a lot of fun on the way.

On the second ride, she took her friend Celeste, who was on her first horseback ride ever. Sydney rode Bridger with Gary as her guide. Another great ride up the mountain!

If you have younger kids (or ones who haven't ridden before), you can take them for an inexpensive shorter ride led by a walking guide with a lead rope. It's a great way to introduce them to horses and make sure they are comfortable before you take them out on the trail.

You'll love Gary and Penny...tell them Sydney sent you!
