Visit the Alpacas

Alpacas-Angel-Fire-Day-Trip

Every time we have been to Angel Fire we have visited the alpacas at Victory Ranch, and we never tire of it! It is just about an hour's drive south of Angel Fire (with spectacular views along the way, of course) and when you get there you can take a tour where you actually feed them. It only costs $3 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

Unlike llamas, which can be temperamental (our niece was spit on by a llama once!), these animals are gentle and will eat from your hands. A few will jostle for food, but they are never frightening or mean. They are so sweet we would recommend this tour even for the youngest children (parent-supervised of course). And if you have teenagers who roll their eyes when you suggest the trip, go anyway. They'll fall in love, too.

Be sure to call ahead to make sure you know when the tour/feeding times are, and give yourself about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there on the winding roads if the weather is iffy. Victory Ranch is closed in January.

There are many beautiful items made from alpaca's fiber in the store. Our daughter treasures the "stuffed animal" version she got there, and I love the socks we picked up. They are perfect for skiing - soft, and cozy when you're cold but cooling when you are warm.

Two Tips:

First Tip: The only pit stop we've found along the way is at Coyote Creek State Park which does have a restroom and picnic area. In fact, it's a great place to stop with a picnic lunch after your trip to the ranch. You can hike around the park, or younger kids can play on the playground. (Victory Ranch has a nice restroom and two vending machines for drinks or snacks.)

Second Tip: Buy a Victory Ranch T-shirt and you'll get a free feeding as well as a discount in the store.
