Vietnam Veterans National Memorial

When you first drive into Angel Fire, you may notice the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial, a white winged structure atop a hill overlooking the village. The Chapel was constructed beginning in September of 1968 by Dr. and Mrs. Victor Westphal in honor of their son David who was killed while serving in Vietnam.

The Memorial is now operated by the New Mexico State Parks. There is a visitors center/museum, the Chapel, and an outdoor amphitheater

Hours of Operation

Visitors Center: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week. Chapel: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It is hard to describe the impact the Angel Fire Memorial has on many of us when we visit it. Even if you did not lose a loved one in service, there is a very unique sacred energy to this spot on the mountain, and it is impossible not to experience it.

Our guide Randy King took us on the tour, which took a little over an hour. The tour is highly recommended, so make sure you call ahead and find out what hours it will be offered. You'll learn about how and why the Chapel was created, and hear some unforgettable stories about both its history, as well as the history of the area. The tour is free, though donations are always welcome.

We do recommend if you have younger children who may get antsy, that you divide an conquer -- maybe one parent can take them one time, while the other takes the tour. This is especially important if you are taking the tour along with others who may have served, or lost loved ones in service.
