Great Angel Fire Books

Looking for a great Angel Fire book to take along on your next vacation? Want a good trail guide, birding book, or hope to learn more about Angel Fire history?

Here are the books we recommend. You can pick them up ahead of time at your bookstore or on Amazon, or better yet, support an Angel Fire business and call the Corner Bookstore and ask them to set them aside for you!

Lure Lore and Legends: A History of New Mexico's Moreno Valley

Angel Fire NM history book

This book is a history of New Mexico's Moreno Valley. Written by assorted contributors to the Moreno Valley Writer's Guild, you'll read about the intriguing history of this area. The back cover offers these teasers, and you'll find all the answers in the book:

  • How did Angel Fire get its name?
  • Why is the nationally famous DAV Vietnam Memorial located in the Moreno Valley?
  • Who was the Moreno Valley serial killer who greeted unsuspecting guests at this cabin at the base of Palo Flechado Pass?
  • What Moreno Valley town was proposed to replace Santa Fe as New Mexico's state capital?

And much more! Fascinating stuff!

Wild Indigo: A Wild Mystery

Wild Indigo: great New Mexico book

We were in Angel Fire the day that the author of this novel, Sandi Ault, was giving a reading. We didn't know it though, until afterward when our favorite park ranger Randy told us about her and her novels. We went over to the Corner bookstore and I picked up a copy of Wild Indigo, plus a copy of her second book, Wild Inferno, which had just come out.

I loved this novel! Not only is a very well-written mystery, on par with the top mystery writers, it also offers a fascinating look at New Mexico Pueblo Indian culture.

Sandi was "adopted" by a Pueblo Indian family. If you know their culture, they do not reveal a lot to outsiders. She kept their privacy but wove fictional details into this story that help us get a glimpse of what their lives and beliefs might be like.

If you are looking for a great read during your vacation in Angel Fire New Mexico, this is the book you must pick up!

The Hiker's Guide to the Enchanted Circle

There are some fabulous hikes in Angel Fire, including some very family friendly hikes if you have younger kids. Or if you want something more strenuous, you'll find that too.

When we were there in August, we hiked every day and we never felt so good!

If you are going to hike in Angel Fire, you can stop by the Chamber of Commerce and pick up some free maps.

But I also recommend you buy this book, The Hiker's Guide to the Enchanted Circle by Kathy Kalen. Kathy and her husband were Floridians (like us) who finally made the move to Angel Fire year-round.

Their book is the best one I've seen for local hikes. We've even put it in our Angel Fire vacation rental condo for our guests to find their own favorite hiking spots.

Although it's listed on Amazon, unless you have plenty of time to order it, you may want to call the Corner Bookstore and have them hold a copy for you.
