Angel Fire Wildlife

chipmunk in Angel Fire NM

We love to get outdoors at Angel Fire, and one of the great things about this area is that it's easy to spot wildlife. Right outside our condo, for example, is a field filled with prairie dogs. Go down there in the morning or evening, stand still, and you'll spot dozens of them scampering from their burrows.

We put out hummingbird food (1 part sugar to 4 parts water) in a feeder on our condo balcony and see hummingbirds visiting all day long in the summer.

On a hike just down the road, we were startled by a mother deer whose fawn bounded right in front of us. The father deer stood in the distance watching us, and another fawn stayed close to mom.

One night we drove from Taos into Angel Fire very late at night. Fortunately, it was foggy so we were driving very slowly when up ahead of us loomed several shaggy shapes in the road. We slowed down to see a family of elk by the side of the road. As we made our way over the mountains, we saw probably twenty or more elk -- very close up.

We've also seen a coyote on a trail ride in the mountains, and one crossed the road in front of us on the drive from Santa Fe.

And, of course, there is our bear encounter you can read about here...

If your family likes to hike, make sure you keep a camera handy. You never know what you may see!
