Angel Fire ATVs

The National Forest near Angel Fire and near Red River offer the largest and most varied areas for OHV’s and ATV’s. The National Forest is currently updating the Travel Management Rule that will go into effect in 2009 covering the roads and areas permitting motorized traffic.

The Carson National Forest is America’s Great outdoors. Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.5 million acres covered by the Carson National Forest.

There are 3 access points to the National Forest near Angel Fire (no legal access directly from Angel Fire).

The first is reached by driving south on 434 from Angel Fire, 1.5 miles past Monte Verde Lake and turn right at FR76 sign.

The second is at the Elliot Barker trailhead on US64 west of the 434 intersection (blinking light) a half mile at a sharp turn. No motorized except snowmobiles.

The third is on US64 west of the 434 intersection (8.5 miles). Turn left on 437 at the Enchanted Moon RV Park.

Forest Roads are open to all motorized traffic, except FR437 & 438 is closed Dec 31 through April 1 for habitat protection.

Forest roads are not plowed.

Winter parking on FR76 access is not available

Forest Trails

  • FT70 off of FR76 open to ATVs, Dirt Bikes, and snowmobiles
  • FT70A, 70B, open to snowmobiles only
  • Elliot Barker Trail (EB), open to snowmobiles only
  • Snowmobiles permitted off roads

Angel Fire Rules

Motorized Vehicles are prohibited on private property without written permission; greenbelts (even those that are unmarked); and on Angel Fire & state roads.

There is no legal access to the National Forest directly from Angel Fire.

New Mexico ATV Laws

January 1, 2006 New Laws:

Under 18 Riders

  • Must wear helmet & eyewear
  • Must pass OHV safety training course
  • Must have adult supervision unless they have a OHV safety permit & license
  • Can’t carry any passengers
  • Riders under 10 must have supervision

All Riders

  • All OHVs must be registered & licensed
  • Out of state visitors need to have registration from home state or obtain temporary NM registration
  • Dirt bikes and ATVs must have spark arrestors
  • Headlight & Taillight required at night

How you CAN’T ride:

  • Careless, reckless, or negligent manner
  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Chasing animals
  • Over 10mph within 200 feet of business, equestrian, bicyclist, pedestrian, and dwelling
  • On any paved street or highway

How you CAN ride:

  • Across streets and highways after stop
  • Off the side of roadways to get to a riding area where no other route exist
